About

This page is provisional and will be revised.

Montessori for Puppies is a way of thinking about raising puppies that draws on evidence about development, learning, movement and agency, and on close observation of the puppies themselves.

The name is meant to be evocative rather than exact. It points towards a handful of ideas with clear parallels in Montessori thinking: a prepared environment, the freedom to choose and move within it, attention to developmental readiness, and an adult whose job is to watch and adjust rather than direct.

None of this is new, and none of it was invented here. Many thoughtful breeders already do some or many of these things. The aim of this project is to make the reasoning explicit. Knowing why an arrangement might matter makes it easier to adapt it, to improvise with what is to hand, and to notice possibilities that a fixed list would miss.

It is not a prescription, an equipment list or a week-by-week programme. Every litter, breed, mother, household and developmental period is different, and what suited one litter on one day may not suit another.

This diary

This diary follows one litter. It records what was offered in the box, what was noticed, and what was changed in response. That includes things that were offered and received little interest, which were removed or left for later. Those are part of the record too.

The photographs are selected rather than continuous. They show moments that seemed worth recording, alongside a photograph of the whole box on most days. They are a field record, not a controlled experiment, and the notes try to keep what was seen separate from what it might mean.
